Detour First of all, I really enjoyed this episode. It was nice to have a monster of the week episode again for a change instead of the long string of mythology and flashbacks. However, I didn't think the monster was that original, after all, the concept of an invisible creature is found everywhere. But overlooking that, it was x-tremely cool, probably one of the best created monsters that have been done. Very good special effect. And, now, how can anyone overlook the obvious UST in this episode. Yet, although I consider myself a 'shipper, I'm becoming greatly concerned this season with them. I believe that any true romance between Mulder and Scully before the conclusion or near conclusion of the show would simply ruin it, and become similar to what this one did. The motel room, the log, I could go on. It seemed as if the "conversation by the log" was a filler, like they couldn't get enough semi-intelligent story advancements to fill 44 minutes. Already this season we have overloaded UST moments. If there become too many episodes with prime UST moments, guess what? It won't be special anymore, but rather common and ordinary. No more surprise "Awww, how cute!" scenes that have separated average episodes from some of the best. The Redux's brought us the hospital scenes, which there was appropriate: Scully was dying and needed comfort from a friend. Yet there wasn't any obvious reason for it in Detour. So what if Mulder got hurt? I'm not saying that I don't care that Mulder was injured, however, we've seen him hurt more badly before without receiving as much Scully comfort.(Or so that we've seen on screen.) So, that has been said, the episode did seem to be lacking enough steam to get through an hour, including commercials. When you think about it, there wasn't much to it. We have the "Mulder, I need your help!" call, the chase in the woods, and the stupid "I'm going to investigate when I know there's something dangerous out there." Really all they were doing was walking through the woods. But, I must admit, I was entertained, and sometimes that's all you want on Sunday nights, right? Being critical is half the fun. Some things that weren't quite right: Notice when Mulder's answering Scully's help call, his hair is wet, but then he gets to her, voila! It airdrys in seconds! When Scully's companion suddenly disappears, she doesn't even attempt to walk to the place where she vanished. Good investigative skills, Scully! I admit I'm not an expert on Florida, but those didn't look like Florida woods to me. Correct me if I'm wrong. Something I liked: Silly Mulder just suddenly getting out of the car. So typical of him, you'd almost expect it, but it's still surprising. And why would the investigators just let Mulder walk through like that?
